How We Grow
At Calder Farm we use sustainable, more than organic practices with all of our produce and animals. We practice holistic management and are happy to show you around the farm so you can see how we grow. We are not certified organic, however, we go above and beyond organic practices to ensure we are providing the most healthy option for our family and customers.
We grow at two sites. Our animals are grazed at Coldharbour Ranch, part of the Coldharbour Institute. We work alongside Coldharbour in its mission to educate our community on sustainable living practices. Our vegetables are located on the VanTuyl property, as a lease through the City of Gunnison.
We have a herd of Large Black/Hereford hogs, heritage breeds, that are known for their grazing ability, hardiness, and meat production (especially bacon). Our vegetable crops include heirloom root crops, such as Purple Haze, Scarlet Nantes, and Amsterdam carrots, Purple Globe Top turnips, Touchstone Gold beets, All Blue, and Dark Red Norland potatoes, Russian Banana fingerling potatoes, Inchilium and Metechi garlic, Siberian and Lacinato kale, Red Express and Copenhagen cabbage, Chioggia beets, purple and Belstar broccoli, various Asian greens, and over 40 varieties of leaf lettuce.
Meet Calder Farm
Blaine and MJ are a husband and wife team and the owners of Calder Farm Ltd. We are dedicated to providing regenerative food for the Gunnison Valley. We believe that food brings people together and creates a strong, resilient community. Calder Farm provides quality produce and pork products for our community while managing the land so that we regenerate soil and a healthy environment.
Calder Farm deeply believes in healthy people and healthy land. We offer fresh, regenerative food, grown in our community, for our community.
Blaine and MJ have been growing for a combined 10 years both in Patagonia, Chile, and most recently Reno, NV. MJ has her Masters in Environmental Management where her work focused on developing strategies for increasing resilience for local and regional food systems. Blaine focuses on all the hard labor of the farm. He is a master pig and chicken wrangler and has one amazingly green thumb. We both love to grow food, share it with family and friends, and are dedicated to regenerating the land. Calder Farm is a founding member of the Gunnison Valley Producers' Guild.
